At London Terrariums we care about the environment and our impact on it. That’s why we only use peat-free compost in our terrariums and our terrarium kits. We also stock Soil Ninja for your home potting needs who are also proud to be peat-free. 

Peat has been a main ingredient in gardening compost for many years. It forms in the ground when plants don’t completely decay and builds up over centuries retaining water and creating wetlands. Over the years, this peat has been dug up for use in gardening as it is a nutrient-rich substrate. This causes huge problems to the environment, releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Peatlands cover just 3% of land surface globally but store over 42% of our planet's soil carbon. These peatlands are also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. We cannot keep extracting peat to make compost for our home gardens, the cost to our planet and habitats is just too great. 

From 2024 peat will be banned from all compost in the UK. But what is the alternatives? 

Coco Coir

Coir, or coconut fibre, is the greenest peat-free compost option. Made from the discarded husks of coconuts, this compost is renewable and much lighter than traditional compost. 

We use a perfectly balanced mix of coir, activated charcoal, bark, Sphagnum moss and worm castings in our Terrariums and terrarium kits. It’s highly nutritious and provides the ideal conditions for growing plants in terrariums. 

Worm Castings

A natural fertiliser and soil conditioner, worm castings are produced by worms (worm poo) and are rich in Nitrogen and Phosphates. Mix this into your coir soil when repotting or add a top layer to a plant that still has room to grow.
