Well here is your new best friend the soil moisture meter, place spike into the compost and it will let you know if the soil needs any extra water. 

The hygrometer is designed with a mechanical scale: The red zone indicates dry to slightly damp soil, and the green zone indicates the soil has the correct humidity level, and the blue zone means the soil is very damp.
